The Christian (Part 1)
The Christian is that person who has willingly surrendered his or her life to Jesus. It is an experience Jesus referred to as born again (John 3:3). It occurs when the heart of a man is completely transformed by the work of the Holy Spirit through the blood of Jesus which cleanses the heart and washes away sin. When this happens, the man is made a new creature and his old life style of sin ends. His conduct changes, his desire is made anew and his focus is drawn away from the world to Jesus.
_“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.”_ (2 Corinthians 5:17).
The Christian becomes a new person not by resolutions, religious activities or generosity towards the needy. These actions are good in themselves but they cannot alter the sinfulness of man. The change that occurs is the work of God. Jesus by his work on the cross and through his resurrection, unilaterally transforms the heart of a willingly and repentant sinner.
_“I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.”_ (Ezekiel 36:26)
The moment you surrender to Jesus and he becomes your Lord and Saviour, he immediately gives you a new heart and spirit. He removes the old heart that was corrupted by sin and replaces it with a new one he created in his righteousness.
Because the change happened in the core of the individual (his heart and spirit), his transformed life is evident for all to see. He becomes a light that cannot be hidden. He’s saved and his sins are completely washed a way by the blood of Jesus.
It therefore follows that no one becomes a Christian by birth, name, activity or religious affiliation. Neither does any become a Christian by dressing or praying in a certain way or in participating in any form of christian activity. You don’t become a Christian by the title you bear or position you occupied.
To become a true christian there are steps to follow. No one walks through the steps and does not become a real christian.
Step 1. You are a sinner. You already know that and those around know too. _‘If we claim, “We don’t have any sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we claim, “We have never sinned,” we make him a liar and his word is not in us.’ (_ 1 John 1:8,10). You are a helpless sinner and you need help.
Step 2. Repent. Sin will ruin your life some day if not already. Your sin is like a life coal you carry on your naked body. It will burn you. Repenting of it means you drop the sin as you would the hot coal. You turn away and forsake the sin completely. There are no half measures.
Step 3. You turn to the Lord. He is the Lamb of God that takes away the sin of the world. Invite him into your heart to be your Lord and Saviour. He is calling you now:
_“Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”_ (Matthew 11:28)
Step 4. Believe. As you invite him to your heart, believe he will come in.
“ _Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me.”__ (Revelation 3:20)
If you desire to be a Christian, please repeat this prayer in faith:
*“Dear Lord, I come to you as a sinner worthy of your judgement. I’m sorry for all my sins. I turn my back on them. Please remove them from me and save me. Come into my heart and be my Lord and Saviour. I believe you have answered in Jesus name”*
