The Christian (Part 2)
We know by scripture that the Christian is the individual whose sins have been washed away by the eternal blood of Jesus (Heb. 9:14). The washing away of sin is not an end in itself. It is the beginning of a life long journey of living for God. Salvation or born again or redemption brought the Christian to the kingdom for a reason and to a lifestyle. It is a complete aberration if any other lifestyle dominates a professing christian.
Why did you become a Christian?
a. *It is so you can become a child of God* . _“But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name”_ (John 1:12). It simply means you were a child of someone before you became a child of God. Jesus said it was the devil: _“Your father is the devil. You are his child(ren), and you want to do what your father wants…_ (John 8:44 CEB). At salvation, you changed who your father is. You now belong to the Almighty.
b. *It is so you can have a different destiny and destination.* Everyone outside Christ is a sinner and every sinner is perpetually a slave. His destiny is to live and die for the devil unless he is delivered. Jesus said because he walks and lives in the broad way, he is gradually, continuously and foolishly hell bound. _“…for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat”_ (Matthew 7:13). The Christian is removed from this broad way and from its destructive end and placed on the road of life and to heaven. _“But the gate that leads to life is narrow and the road difficult, so few people find it.”_ (Matthew 7:14). You become one of the very lucky few that find life in the midst of death.
c. *It is so you can taste the kingdom life.* A life in Christ is a life in the kingdom of God. It is a life that is transitioned into a better and a higher way of living; a kingdom life that has Jesus’ signature written all over it. _“Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son”_ (Colossians 1:13). You are now a citizen of the kingdom of God. All the benefits of this kingdom are for your pleasure. _“Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.”_ (1 Peter 2:10). You are no longer who you used to be. You are now His citizen and under His responsibility. _“And the father said to him, Son, you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours.”_ (Luke 15:31 AMP).
d. *It is so you can live a transformed and changed life.* No one is a Christian whose life has not been changed. No one is a child of God without a transformed life. Salvation comes with a lifestyle. Redemption is a way of living. Born again confers on you the right and power to be godly. There’s nothing like a sinning christian. Christianity is not a title nor a badge we wear. It’s not a name we answer or a religion we uphold. It is not the creed we follow. It is life we live and the light that shines in and through us. A Christian is that person that is SAVED to LIVE for God. Any other definition is not only false but evil. _“Being conscious that our old man was put to death on the cross with him, so that the body of sin might be put away, and we might no longer be servants to sin.”_ (Romans 6:6 BBE). The Christian no longer serves sin. He’s not indulgent. He’s not lost in the sinning crowd. He’s not two-faced. _“You were taught to leave your old self—to stop living the evil way you lived before. That old self becomes worse, because people are fooled by the evil things they want to do.”_ (Ephesians 4:22 NCV). He stops living like he used to. Sin no longer offers him any pleasure. He hates to sin and he sorrows when he does. _“In the Lord’s name, I tell you this. Do not continue living like those who do not believe. Their thoughts are worth nothing.”_ (Ephesians 4:17 NCV). You cannot continue to live like unbelievers. Movie stars, footballers, musicians and so-called celebrities are not your role models. Their ways of living, dressing, conversation and conduct are not your motivational drive. Your focus is increasingly on God and His words.
